I’ve always had a soft spot for Atari Teenage Riot, I must say, so it’s very heart-warming to finally see a compilation of some of their finest moments. They were a funny bunch that’s for sure, middle class German kids shouting about political change, fusing rave with metal, noise and punk with electronica… surely it shouldn’t have worked? We had PWEI and Germany had Atari Teenage Riot, but they pulled it off, and carried on releasing until the sad unexpected death of their MC Carl Crack in 2001. Back in the day Alec Empire’s clan were making waves, in both the rock and the avant garde scene – with them garnering fans from all courts, the Beastie Boys signing them to Grand Royal, and artists as diverse as the Wu Tang Clan, Rage Against the Machine and Beck asking them to tour with them. It was ATR mayhem, and now although that time has come and gone, listening to this cd I can remember exactly why everyone was so damn excited about the band. Just skip over to the shocking ‘Atari Teenage Riot’ – their first single, and you'll know exactly what I mean. Unforgettable guitar riffage, electronic experimentation and political anger – this might be the reason Bjork called them the most powerful band she’d seen since Public Enemy.
